By uniting Brethren through shared hobbies, professions, and passions, these Lodges bring new energy and deeper friendships
Special Interest Lodges are becoming one of the most exciting ways to strengthen and grow Freemasonry in Essex. By uniting Brethren through shared hobbies, professions, and passions, these Lodges bring new energy, deeper friendships, and a renewed sense of belonging to the Craft.
They blend the timeless traditions of Freemasonry with activities that resonate with today’s members, from photography and classic cars to rugby, football, fishing, golf, and the armed services. For many Brethren, joining a Special Interest Lodge offers an enjoyable and meaningful way to remain active, meet new people, and rediscover what first inspired them to join.
For those already in a Lodge, joining a second Lodge can be a natural next step. It opens the door to new friendships, new experiences, and different styles of working, helping Brethren broaden their Masonic journey. Special Interest Lodges are an ideal home for this, offering ready-made communities built around shared enthusiasm.
These Lodges also support members who wish to continue their journey into the Royal Arch. With the introduction of the new Combined Sports Chapter, Companions can now enjoy the same sporting passions beyond the Craft, a perfect example of Craft and Royal Arch working hand in hand as One Organisation.
Across Essex, themed Lodges are already thriving. Comrades Lodge brings together Brethren with military backgrounds, Springfield Lodge unites those in the emergency services, and other Lodges centred around sport, cars, and creativity are growing rapidly. New ideas are also emerging, including American sports, craft ales, darts and pool, LEGO, science fiction, motorcycles, fine spirits and cigars.
Special Interest Lodges help Lodges remain vibrant and relevant. They attract new candidates, re-engage existing members, strengthen retention, and provide enjoyable spaces for Brethren to form lasting friendships. For individual Brethren, they offer fresh opportunities to connect, grow, and enjoy their Freemasonry in a new way.
Whether you’re interested in joining a second Lodge, exploring a themed Lodge, or simply looking to meet Brethren who share your interests, Essex has a growing range of opportunities waiting to be discovered.
