With over 255 years of history between them United Chapter and Comrades Chapter merge together to become a single vibrant force

St Giles Masonic Centre in Colchester recently hosted the historic merger of two Essex Royal Arch Chapters. In 2023, members from United Chapter No. 697 and Comrades Chapter No. 2976 decided to join forces and create a single, vibrant Chapter after experiencing several years of declining numbers and inactivity.
With over 255 years of history between them - United Chapter formed in 1857 and Comrades Chapter in 1938 - the prospect of losing either group was inconceivable. Recently, members from both Chapters made special efforts to support each other’s events, stepping in to fill vacancies as needed. The groups even coordinated to meet on the same evening, securing dispensation for such occasions. These joint activities brought the Companions closer together and with small committees from both Chapters managing the necessary administrative tasks to complete the amalgamation, made official approval by Supreme Grand Chapter a mere formality.
Therefore, on Wednesday, December 10th, 2025, the newly formed United and Comrades Chapter No. 697 held their first gathering together. After the meeting, First Principal Andy Colsell shared his thoughts: “I’m glad we finally reached this point. At times, it felt painfully slow, but the administrative work had to be thorough. Looking ahead, it’s exciting to have roles filled by committed and enthusiastic companions ready to step up,” he continued, “In the past, we often struggled to even hold a festive board due to low attendance, so merging means our meetings will be well attended and new members won’t be rushed into positions.”
The Companions were pleased and honoured to be joined for this historical meeting by George Lambeth, Assistant to the Provincial Grand Principals (APGP), who said, “I am just so happy to see how well the two Chapters have merged. It will be nice to see this new Chapter at the upcoming installation night in February when offices are shared out between the companions of the two separate units – fully cementing the amalgamation.” He went on to say he was pleased to hear that the Chapter was preparing to exalt three potential members and two joining members, adding, “I am very much looking forward to seeing this chapter grow and grow.”
Later at the festive board, the APGP applauded the efforts of the amalgamation committee and the companions for coming together so well. He felt that this was a great example of what can be done when like-minded companions work together for the greater good.
