Essex Freemasons celebrate year of local engagements bringing awards and civic recognition to their contribution to communities across Essex
Essex Freemasons are receiving widespread recognition following a year of strengthened community engagement, with a series of awards and civic honours reflecting the growing impact of their work.
This progress marks the first full year of delivering the ‘Third Pillar’ of the United Grand Lodge of England strategy, focused on building stronger, more transparent relationships with local organisations while increasing visibility and reach.
A Year of Recognition
The effectiveness of this outward-facing approach is reflected in a number of civic commendations over the past 12 months, including:
Honours presented by the Essex High Sheriff in recognition of service to the county
Pride of Essex Awards recognition for the Cross Keys Community Fund
Alzheimer’s awareness accreditation, supporting vulnerable members of the community
Two Mayoral awards recognising outstanding community service and local impact across Essex
A forthcoming Mayoral award acknowledging efforts to tackle homelessness and wider social need
Strength Through Diversity and Collaboration
Central to this progress is a modern, inclusive approach built on collaboration. Over the past year, Essex Freemasons have strengthened relationships with the Order of Women Freemasons and the Honourable Fraternity of Ancient Freemasons.
A series of joint networking events, supported by the women’s orders and aligned with key Essex offices, including Deputy Lieutenants and local authorities, has provided a platform to engage with local organisations and address key issues such as domestic violence awareness and child welfare. These events demonstrate how collaboration across organisations can deliver meaningful outcomes within the wider community.
Grassroots Impact and Civic Duty
From the Cross Keys Community Fund and Orsett Masonic Community Fund to countywide Remembrance Day activity, the focus remains on practical support at a local level.
In Clacton-on-Sea, the Colvin Memorial Temple has seen a renewed focus on community use, creating a more open and accessible space for local engagement.
This work is further supported by an ongoing commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant, ensuring continued support for the armed forces community.
A Simple Philosophy for Lasting Change
In a joint statement, Elliott Chevin, Assistant Provincial Grand Master, and David Barton, Provincial Community Engagement Lead, said:
“Our approach is simple, to work alongside our communities, listen, and respond where support is needed most. By embracing diversity, and building strong partnerships, particularly through collaboration across the wider Masonic community, we are delivering meaningful change and helping to shape a more inclusive and connected future for our communities.”
Through this balance of tradition and progress, Essex Freemasons are not only delivering charitable support, but creating opportunities, strengthening communities, and demonstrating that diversity and collaboration are central to lasting positive change.
