An engaging talk by two Essex Freemasons sparked fresh dialogue, deepened trust with shared charitable values uniting local civic groups

Essex Freemasons, Steve Hall, Charity Team South and Central representative, and Steve Bruyel, Deputy Provincial Grand Charity Steward have been strengthening ties with one of the county’s most respected civic organisations. In front of a packed Women’s Institute (WI) audience, which drew around 40 to 50 members, their presentation on Freemasonry’s evolving role in community support was well received by all.
The talk was framed around inclusivity, highlighting not only the work of Essex Freemasons but also the significant contribution of the two female Orders—the Order of Women Freemasons (OWF) and the Honourable Fraternity of Ancient Freemasons (HFAF). The presenters underscored that charitable purpose and community engagement are shared endeavours across all Orders in the province.
WI members were given a clear and practical overview of Masonic benevolence, ranging from grassroots support through the Cross Keys Community Fund to the broader reach of the Essex Charity Team and the national impact of the Masonic Charitable Foundation. Real-world examples spanned schools, care homes, youth organisations, and groups working with vulnerable people, as well as an expanding drive to make Masonic Centres accessible community assets. They also had the opportunity to discuss the upcoming Essex 250th anniversary celebration events, which will further highlight Freemasonry’s enduring role in supporting communities throughout Essex.
For WI members interested in exploring Freemasonry further, information was on-hand for themselves or their families, including details about the OWF and HFAF. The presentation stimulated thoughtful questions and sparked interest in further collaboration.
Provincial Community Engagement Lead, David Barton praised the effort, saying, “The two presenters demonstrated how we put our values in to practice, while reinforcing Freemasonry’s commitment to openness and partnership. The event cements another step in Essex Freemasons’ ongoing mission to build meaningful connections across the county.”
