A united front of remembrance by Essex Freemason throughout the County standing proudly alongside their communities

Freemasons across Essex came together this year in an inspiring display of unity to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice. From Frinton-on-Sea to Burnham-on-Crouch, and from Colchester to Thurrock, Lodges and Masonic Centres throughout the Province joined local remembrance services, laying wreaths and standing proudly alongside their communities.
The Provincial campaign encouraged every Centre and Lodge to take part in their local ceremony, reaffirming Freemasonry’s enduring commitment to service and civic responsibility.
At South Woodham Ferrers, residents of the Masonic Housing Association worked with the Mayor, Councillor Alan Shearring, to restore and redecorate a ‘Tommy’ mannequin for display at the town’s Civic Hall. Once weathered and worn, the figure was transformed into a striking symbol of remembrance, adorned with hundreds of hand crocheted poppies created by residents. For many, the memories of the Second World War remain vivid, and each stitch served as a quiet tribute to those who served and sacrificed.
In Thurrock, ‘Get Started Art’ partnered with local Scouts to install creative displays across the borough, each featuring messages of hope and remembrance from young people, a moving reminder of how the spirit of remembrance unites generations.
At Orsett Masonic Hall, members joined the Mayor of Thurrock, Councillor Sue Shinnick, in laying wreaths at four services before hosting a community lunch for residents, veterans, and families. The Cross Keys Community Fund also took part, laying six wreaths and supporting repairs to a damaged war memorial, ensuring that these symbols of remembrance are preserved for years to come.
Provincial Grand Charity Steward, Chris Hicks represented Loughton Masonic Centre, while in Maldon, the Masonic Hall Association joined the town’s parade and opened its doors to welcome veterans and guests for refreshments and fellowship.

In Clacton, the Southcliffe Lodge No. 4230 also hosted a memorable Remembrance Day lunch at the Colvin Memorial Temple welcoming nearly 80 guests including serving and retired members of the armed forces, together with brethren, family, and friends. The day began with several attendees joining the Remembrance Service at Clacton seafront, where they paid their respects to those who gave their lives in service of their country.
Across the county, from coastal towns to historic centres, every act of remembrance carried the same message, to honour those who gave everything and to stand shoulder to shoulder with the communities Freemasons proudly serve.
“It has been truly inspirational to see so many Centres and Lodges opening their doors and taking an active part in civic remembrance events across Essex,” said David Barton, Provincial Community Engagement Lead. “These moments show the very best of Freemasonry, people coming together in friendship and service to honour the past while strengthening the communities we are proud to be part of.”
Through their united efforts, Freemasons across Essex have shown that remembrance is not only an act of reflection, but a living expression of the values that continue to guide them: integrity, friendship, respect, and service.
